THE STEPS NEEDED TO TRANSFORM A RUGBY TEAM

I think France are in this category. Where are England and what changes are needed?

Bring in a leader from outside to help you with that transformation. Someone who has done it before. Experience is key.

The new leader will work with all those in charge of the team or club to get clarity and agreement on what the objectives are: what results are desired, what style of rugby is wanted, what team and club culture is to be created. He will also get agreement on the appetite for risk that the club has for taking initiatives to realise these objectives

A clear decision making framework and Strategic Plan will be put in place with phases of work for delivery

Decisions will be made on what playing and support positions can be filled by existing squad members and where they should be sourced from further afield. If additional expertise is necessary then the new leader will know where to look for that external talent and will secure it on the best possible terms.

Systems, processes and culture will be addressed. The new leader will put these in place, building on the good things already in place while bringing in new ideas and leveraging the external expertise where necessary to make it happen.

The new leader will motivate and support the team, manage the risks, work within agreed budgets and make sure that there is clear visibility of progress and performance.

Manage the delivery to achieve the necessary results. Work through the setbacks as they appear.
